Mangosteen

The purple mangosteen is a tropical fruit native to Southeast Asia. Its history involves a very slow process of discovery; in fact, not a lot of people outside the tropical world knew about this exotic fruit, until it became known worldwide because of its health benefits.  Its plant has a really slow developing process and bears fruit once a year. Until the word about this exotic and enticing fruit health benefits started to spread around, most of the people in non-tropical countries have never tasted the fresh mangosteen because it is rare for mangosteens to be out in the market.  That is because this fruit is extremely picky when it comes to climate; it survives strictly in tropical places only, even the slightest temperature drop is fatal for the fruit.

Mangosteen is a round fruit, just a little bit smaller than an orange. It has a crown-like structure at a head from which the stem emerges. Though it has a smooth, attractive purple rind due to the presence of flavonoids, its endocarp or flesh is clear and white. It is a juicy fruit with an exceptional sweet, slightly acidic flavor mixed with a bit of sour tinge. People who tasted this fruit describe the taste with one word – exquisite.

Due to its fragile rind and easily perishable flesh, mangosteen cannot fulfill the export requirements, so it is only available fresh in local tropical areas. People outside the tropical world eventually found a way to experience the fruit – through its bottled concentrate. Still, you can not compare the experience of tasting natural, fresh fruit to tasting only its juice concentrate.
